Paparazzo killed while trying to photograph Justin Bieber's car

A 29-year-old photographer was killed trying to snap a photo of (who he thought was) Justin Bieber on New Year's Day. According to report produced by the Los Angeles Times, a California Highway Patrol officer stopped Bieber's Ferrari just before 6:00 p.m. The photographer stopped his car on Sepulveda Boulevard and crossed the road to get a better vantage point before taking pictures. Apparently, a picture of Justin Bieber breaking the law could be worth more than $100,000.

The officer saw the photographer and ordered him to leave the area. The photographer obliged and attempted to cross Sepulveda to return to his vehicle when he was struck and killed by a SUV.

Bieber was reportedly not in the vehicle. Instead, a friend was driving.

Sources close to the accident report that the driver of the SUV was distraught at the scene. Authorities also indicated that she will not likely face criminal charges. One officer indicated that the photographer reportedly did not look for traffic to clear as he was crossing the road.

Bieber released a statement saying that his thoughts and prayers are with the photographer's family. He also called the situation a "tragic accident" and that he hopes that "meaningful legislation" will come about as a result.

We find this story important because it exemplifies the care that drivers and pedestrians must use in avoiding accidents. Bieber has had a tumultuous relationship with photographers, and was the first celebrity to charge a photographer under a California law that prohibits photographers from following too closely after a car chase last year.
