NHTSA Reports a 47% Increase in Driving Under the Influence of Marijuana
There’s drinking and driving–and then there’s marijuana and driving.
Since the 2012 legalization of marijuana in Colorado, car accidents involving the drug have become more prevalent, causing the state to be on the look-out for those driving while high. Of course, the risk of falling victim to a drugged driver is present even in states where marijuana remains illegal.
A recent study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that there has been at 47% increase in driving under the influence of marijuana. Drivers who tested positive for the drug were determined to be 25% more likely to be involved in a car accident. In some of the states which have legalized marijuana, there have been twice as many fatal crashes involving drivers who had consumed the drug within hours of the incident.
States have varying laws concerning driving under the influence of marijuana. In Wisconsin, there is a zero-tolerance policy for the crime.
